At the Well: 3 – I’m Still Thirsty

Scripture Anchor

“But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.”
John 4:14, NLT

Soul Talk

You can go through the motions and still feel empty. You can keep doing what’s expected—going to work, showing up for people, playing your part—and still carry a thirst that nothing seems to quench.

She came to the well to get water. But water wasn’t what she was really lacking.

Jesus knew. He always knows. That’s why He doesn’t jump into her story with accusations or assumptions. He talks about thirst—because He’s not just pointing to her habits. He’s pointing to her hunger. That deep-down ache that relationships, religion, distractions, or even hard work can’t satisfy.

It’s not that she hadn’t tried. She’d had five husbands. She was with someone now who wasn’t her husband. Whether by choice, tragedy, or rejection—we don’t know all the details. But what we do know is that her soul was still thirsty. And so is yours if you’ve been pouring out but rarely poured into.

Jesus wasn’t offering quick-fix relief. He was offering living water—something that bubbles up from within, something that doesn’t depend on circumstances or other people to keep you full.

That kind of water doesn’t come from effort. It comes from Him.

So many of us are tired not because we’re lazy but because we’ve been trying to meet soul needs with temporary solutions. And like her, we find ourselves still thirsty.

Jesus says there’s another way.

Let’s Talk to God (Prayer)

Dear Lord Jesus,
I admit I’ve looked to things and people to fill me. Sometimes I’ve even tried to convince myself I wasn’t thirsty at all. But the ache is real. And the more I pretend it’s not there, the emptier I feel. Pour Your living water into me—into the places I’ve been trying to fix on my own. I want more than survival. I want to be filled from the inside out. Teach me how to draw from You instead of everything else. In Your precious name, Jesus Christ, I pray, Amen.

Key Questions to Reflect On

  • What have you been using to satisfy your soul that only leaves you thirstier?
  • Are you afraid to admit where you’re still empty?
  • What would it look like to sit with Jesus instead of striving for relief?

Soul Work

Each morning this week, whisper this prayer: “Jesus, I’m thirsty for what only You can give.”
Then take one moment of stillness before you start your day.
Write down what you sense.
