At the Well: 1 – The Well Is Deeper Than I Thought

Scripture Anchor

“Jacob’s well was there; and Jesus, tired from the long walk, sat wearily beside the well about noontime.”
John 4:6, NLT

Soul Talk

Sometimes you show up to a familiar place, needing what you always needed—water, air, space. You’re not expecting anything more than survival. Maybe that’s why she came at noon—when it was hottest, and quietest. No run-ins, no explanations.

But Jesus was already sitting there.

Tired, yes—but waiting. He doesn’t come thundering into her life. He waits where she’s already headed, where her pattern has led her—alone, worn out, unseen. He meets her in the moment between what she’s used to and what she never expected.

Isn’t that how He meets us, too? We return to the wells we’ve dug out of habit or need, and He interrupts them—gently. He doesn’t demand. He starts with a request: “Will you give me a drink?” But that question, like everything He asks, does something deeper.

Because this wasn’t just a water run. She was carrying more than a jar. Maybe she thought she’d buried her past deep enough. Maybe she believed she’d grown numb enough to keep going. But the truth is, no one draws water in the heat of the day unless they’re avoiding something—or someone.

Jesus knew. And still, He waited.

When we’re not looking for healing, He still offers it. He doesn’t force the conversation. He opens a door. If she had walked away, He wouldn’t have chased her. But she stayed—and that changed everything.

You don’t have to bring Him the whole story today. Just bring Him the part you’re carrying now. Sit at the well. He’s already there.

Let’s Talk to God (Prayer)

Dear Lord Jesus,
You meet me in the quiet corners of my day—in places where I thought I was just going through the motions. You see past what I say and into what I carry. I don’t always know how to talk about it, but I want to be found by You. If You’re sitting at the well, then I’ll sit too. Speak to what I’ve tried to bury. Pour living water into the places I’ve kept dry for too long. I may not know how to explain my ache, but I believe You understand it. Thank You for not walking past me. In Your precious name, Jesus Christ, I pray, Amen.

Key Questions to Reflect On

  • Are there places or patterns in your life that you return to out of habit—but not healing?
  • What do you sense Jesus might be asking of you today, even in a small way?
  • If you could ask Him anything, what would you want Him to say back?

Soul Work

This week, take one quiet moment each day to imagine Jesus sitting at your own version of the well. Ask Him: “What are You showing me here?”
Write down one thing each day that He reveals—big or small.
