At the Well: 4 – Letting Go of the Bitterness Within

Scripture Anchor

“But sir, you don’t have a rope or a bucket,” she said, “and this well is very deep. Where would you get this living water?”
John 4:11, NLT

Soul Talk

Not all wells bring life. Some are very deep and laced with pain, resentment, and silent grudges that poison everything we try to enjoy.

Bitterness is sneaky. It starts small—one offense, one betrayal, one unanswered prayer. But if we keep drinking from that well, it begins to shape how we see the world, how we treat people, and how we approach God.

The woman at the well had every reason to be bitter. She’d been dismissed, judged, and probably talked about behind closed doors. But Jesus didn’t just see her pain—He offered her something better. Not a lecture. Not a punishment. A gift.

Living water.

That phrase wasn’t just spiritual poetry. It was an invitation to stop surviving on stale emotions and start living with freedom.

You can’t control what others do. But you can choose what lives inside you. And Jesus is offering to exchange that old, bitter water for something clean and restoring.

This isn’t about pretending it didn’t hurt. It’s about choosing not to let it rule you anymore.

Bitterness keeps you stuck. But His water keeps you going.

Let’s Talk to God (Prayer)

Dear Lord Jesus,
I confess that there are wounds I have carried for too long—wounds that have turned into bitterness and resentment. I’m tired of carrying this weight. Please pour Your living water over these hurting places in my heart. Help me to forgive, to release, and to heal. I want to drink deeply from Your well and find true refreshment. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Key Questions to Reflect On

  • Have I been drinking from a well of bitterness or pain without realizing it?
  • Who or what do I still need to forgive—not to excuse, but to be free?
  • What would it look like to choose freedom instead of resentment today?

Soul Work

This week, name the source of your bitterness in a journal or prayer—no filters, no edits. Then write this simple sentence underneath it:
“I choose to release this and receive what Jesus is offering me.”
Each day, ask the Lord to help you refill your heart with His peace.
