At the Well: 2 – When You Feel Overlooked

Scripture Anchor

“The woman was surprised, for Jews refuse to have anything to do with Samaritans. She said to Jesus, ‘You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. Why are you asking me for a drink?’”
John 4:9, NLT

Soul Talk

Sometimes the real shock isn’t that someone spoke to you—it’s that they saw you.

This woman was used to being avoided, talked around, left out. That’s what happens when people think they already know your story—or assume your story disqualifies you. They don’t have to say a word. You can feel the rejection in their silence, their side-eyes, the way they keep their distance.

She didn’t expect a conversation. Not with a man. Not with a Jew. Not with someone who carried holiness.

So when Jesus spoke, her first reaction wasn’t warmth—it was a wall: “Why are you talking to me?”

Maybe that’s been you. You’re used to showing up and still feeling invisible. Used to being in the room, but not being invited in. You’ve learned to shrink a little—just enough to not take up space. You know how to smile small, to keep your guard up, to expect nothing deep.

But Jesus doesn’t do small talk. He shows up on purpose. He sits where others walk past. He starts where others judge. And what He says might not be long—but it goes straight to the heart.

Her defenses made sense. So do yours.

But what if Jesus is talking to the part of you that’s been skipped over? What if He’s speaking to what you thought didn’t matter anymore? What if He’s asking for a drink not because He needs anything from you—but because He’s trying to give you something more?

He’s not talking to your reputation. He’s not talking to your pain.
He’s talking to you.

Let’s Talk to God (Prayer)

Dear Lord Jesus,
Sometimes I wonder why You would want anything from me at all. I’ve been avoided before—left out, overlooked, even used. So when You approach me with love, I don’t always know how to receive it. But You keep showing up at the places others pass by. You speak to what others have stopped seeing. So I choose to listen. I won’t let fear or memory keep me from You. If You’re willing to speak to me, I’ll stay to hear You. In Your precious name, Jesus Christ, I pray, Amen.

Key Questions to Reflect On

  • Are there places in your life where you feel overlooked, unwanted, or dismissed?
  • What assumptions have you made about who God speaks to or uses?
  • How would your heart respond differently if you believed Jesus was speaking to you—not past you?

Soul Work

This week, pause each day and ask: “What might Jesus want to say to the parts of me I’ve stopped believing in?”
Listen for one truth. Write it down. Speak it out loud.
